TOK Fair – Learning from Experience at EISBarcelona

We recently hosted the second edition of the Theory of Knowledge (ToK) Fair—a valuable opportunity for our IB Y1 students to gain firsthand insight into one of the core projects they will undertake as part of the IB Diploma Programme.

And what better way to embark on this journey than by learning directly from those who have already navigated the process?

Throughout the day, several IB Y2 students presented their ToK work to their first-year peers. They showcased their selected objects, explained the rationale behind their choices, and shared both their methodology and the key insights gained from the experience.

Organised across six classrooms and various stations, the Fair allowed IB Y1 students to chart their own course through the different presentations and discover a range of approaches to the ToK Exhibition. They had the chance to examine real examples, ask questions, clarify doubts, and, above all, gather ideas and note down valuable advice from their peers and teachers in preparation for their turn.

To ensure the visit was an active and reflective experience, students noted their impressions, ideas, and conclusions on a reflection sheet as they moved through the stations.

This second edition of the ToK Fair offered IB Y1 students a practical and engaging introduction to one of the Theory of Knowledge internal assessment components, while providing IB Y2 students with a platform to share their expertise and insights.

It was a day filled with discussion, inquiry, and fresh ideas that once again highlighted the importance of collaborative learning within our IB community.

Everyday Heroes & Leaders: inspiring change through small actions

At European International School of Barcelona, we remain dedicated to providing an education that extends far beyond academic achievement—helping pupils understand who they are, how they relate to others, and the positive impact they can have on the world around them. Building on the success of previous flagship projects—such as Say My Name, which focused on identity and mutual recognition, and Emotions in Motion, dedicated to emotional intelligence—this academic year we are taking our commitment a step further with Everyday Heroes & Leaders, guided by the overarching theme of Inspiring Social Change.

The main objective is to help our pupils, from the youngest in Early Years to the oldest in Secondary and Baccalaureate, discover that being a “hero or leader” does not depend on popularity or visibility. Instead, it stems from the ability to positively influence one’s environment, empathise with others, foster collective well-being, and contribute to social change through small everyday actions.
Throughout the school year, all key stages will take part in age-appropriate activities designed to develop critical thinking, empathy, and social commitment. Through everyday scenarios, reflection, and shared experiences, we will promote values such as active listening, respect, responsibility, cooperation, observing others and one’s surroundings, and collective awareness.

With Everyday Heroes & Leaders, we aim to celebrate everyday heroes and leaders—individuals who transform their immediate surroundings through responsibility, empathy, commitment, and social awareness. Being a role model also means knowing how to listen, respect, act to help, and make decisions with others in mind.

Through this project, we aspire to develop more conscious, critical, and engaged pupils and future citizens who understand that anyone can make a positive contribution to their community. Because great changes begin with small daily actions.

CUANDO EL PATIO TAMBIEN EDUCA

When the playground educates too

When the bell rings, the playground is transformed. There are those who run after a ball, those who prefer to build a den, those who invent a new game, or those who look for that friend to share a moment with. It might seem like just a break between classes, but it is so much more than that.

In the playground, children decide what they want to play, with whom, and how. They agree with one another, change the rules if necessary, resolve minor disagreements, and discover that for a game to work, sometimes you have to listen, compromise, or find a solution that everyone likes.

There are lessons that happen almost unnoticed. Inviting a classmate who is on their own to play. Waiting for a turn. Accepting that you cannot always win. Sharing a spade, a ball, or an idea. These are small gestures repeated every day that, without grand lectures, help children understand what it truly means to live together in community.

Play also offers them a unique opportunity for self-discovery. There are those who dare to propose an idea for the first time, those who discover they enjoy leading a team, or those who prefer to observe before joining in. Each child finds their space, at their own pace, while gaining confidence and autonomy.

That is why, at EISB, we view the playground as an essential part of the educational experience. It is a space where children experiment, make mistakes, try again, form new friendships, and learn from one another in the most natural way possible: through play.

Because growing up is also about learning to live together, to listen, to share, and to trust in oneself. And many of these lessons begin, quite simply, through play.

Minimundos en Nursery EISBarcelona

Little Worlds in Nursery 1: A Magical Journey to the Jungle

In Nursery 1 at EISB, children enjoy experiences full of magic and discovery, such as the creation of a Minimundo (Mini-World) inspired by the rainforest. This carefully designed sensory activity invites children to immerse themselves in a setting rich in textures, colours, sounds, and natural elements.

These small worlds are specifically designed to encourage free play, creativity, and exploration. A jungle environment was recreated using large leaves (natural and fabric), logs and stones, plastic animals (such as monkeys, lions, elephants, and birds), and fabrics suggesting trees and rivers. Fine sand, soil, pinecones, and shells stimulate the sense of touch, all accompanied by ambient nature sounds to enrich the auditory experience.

The children participate with enthusiasm and curiosity. They develop fine motor skills by manipulating the materials, stimulate language by imitating and naming the animals, and express genuine emotions like surprise, concentration, and calm throughout the activity.

These activities allow us to observe each child’s interests while offering them a space where they are the protagonists of their own learning. Through activities like this, we encourage autonomy, symbolic play, and creative thinking, always respecting their pace and offering the freedom to explore.

In Nursery 1, we continue to create environments that connect children with nature, play, and the magic of discovering the world with new eyes.

Looking Ahead to Summer

As another school year comes to an end, I would like to thank all our pupils, families, and staff for their dedication, enthusiasm, and support throughout the year. Together, we have shared many achievements, challenges, and memorable moments that have strengthened our community and helped us grow.

Now, summer invites us to embrace a different pace. It is a time to rest, recharge, and look after our well-being. Spending time outdoors, enjoying moments with family and friends, and simply taking a break from routine are all important ways to restore our energy and maintain a healthy balance.

While holidays are a welcome opportunity to relax, they can also be a wonderful time for discovery. Reading a good book, exploring a new hobby, visiting a museum, travelling, or learning something new can help keep curiosity alive in enjoyable and meaningful ways.

Summer offers many opportunities to discover new interests, create meaningful experiences, and make lasting memories. On behalf of the entire EISB team, I wish you a wonderful summer and look forward to welcoming you back in September for another exciting year together!

A special moment for the EISB community

As we enter the final weeks of the school year, there is a very special atmosphere throughout the school. June brings with it longer days, the excitement of summer just around the corner, and some of the most memorable moments of the year for the entire EISB community.

One of the most important dates in the coming month is, without a doubt, Family Fun Day, one of the most anticipated events on the calendar. More than just an end-of-year party, it is a day that perfectly reflects the spirit of the school: a space for students, families and staff to come together and enjoy everything that makes our community unique.

After a year full of hard work, learning, challenges and achievements, this day gives us all a chance to relax, celebrate and spend time together. The school comes alive with music, performances, games and activities for all ages, filling every corner with energy, excitement and a wonderful sense of community.

Throughout the day, families will be able to enjoy Primary School performances, student STEAM and entrepreneurship projects, as well as exhibitions, games and many surprises. One of the great attractions of the event is the International Family Fair, where everyone shares the cuisine, traditions and customs of their countries of origin, celebrating the enormous cultural diversity that makes the EISB such a dynamic and international community.

With summer and the end of the term drawing ever closer, Family Fun Day reminds us of the importance of getting together, celebrating the road we have traveled and enjoying the last stages of the school year together.

El huerto escolar

The School Vegetable Garden: Learning About Sustainability and Nature

The School Garden Programme at the European International School of Barcelona is designed to offer students an environmental education experience that goes beyond the traditional classroom. This project aims to teach them the process of growing food and the importance of environmental stewardship, allowing them to connect with nature in a direct and meaningful way.

In the garden, students not only learn about planting, but also develop a greater awareness of sustainability and responsible nutrition. This natural space, situated in the heart of our school, is not only an educational tool but also a vibrant meeting point for the entire educational community, where everyone can enjoy and learn the values of nature.

Through this programme, we seek to provide a comprehensive education that fosters our students’ academic and personal development. The garden offers many opportunities for hands-on learning, teaching children skills such as teamwork, responsibility, and environmental care. Each week, students participate in practical activities where they discover how to plant, nurture, and maintain a garden. Additionally, they learn to identify the local biodiversity—from edible plants and flowers to beneficial insects—all within a comprehensive approach to ecosystems.

The School Garden Programme integrates various areas of knowledge, such as Science, Mathematics, and Art, offering students an interdisciplinary learning experience. Thanks to our collaboration with ‘Crea Un Huerto’ (Create a Garden), students have the opportunity to develop valuable skills while strengthening their connection with nature and the environment.

En la recta final del curso

In the final stretch of the course

As the school year comes to an end, clearly everything starts to fall into place. Final exams begin, offering students the opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have developed over the past few months.

These weeks can be intense. Papers, exams, presentations and deadlines pile up, requiring careful organization and constant effort. But precisely because of all this, this is also a profoundly significant stage in your academic journey. It is not just about the final results, but about recognizing the personal progress each student has made.

We encourage our students to face these last weeks with focus and a positive attitude, giving their best in every task. Keeping a good pace until the end is as important as getting off to a good start.

At the same time, this is a time to evaluate the year’s experience. What have they enjoyed the most? What have they learned? What moments will they remember? Asking these questions helps students recognize their progress and appreciate their accomplishments.

The end of the school year is not just about closing a chapter; it is about celebrating growth, building confidence and preparing for the next step.

With perseverance, motivation and determination, we move forward together towards the goal, proud of what we have achieved and ready for what lies ahead.
