TOK Fair – Learning from Experience at EISBarcelona

We recently hosted the second edition of the Theory of Knowledge (ToK) Fair—a valuable opportunity for our IB Y1 students to gain firsthand insight into one of the core projects they will undertake as part of the IB Diploma Programme.

And what better way to embark on this journey than by learning directly from those who have already navigated the process?

Throughout the day, several IB Y2 students presented their ToK work to their first-year peers. They showcased their selected objects, explained the rationale behind their choices, and shared both their methodology and the key insights gained from the experience.

Organised across six classrooms and various stations, the Fair allowed IB Y1 students to chart their own course through the different presentations and discover a range of approaches to the ToK Exhibition. They had the chance to examine real examples, ask questions, clarify doubts, and, above all, gather ideas and note down valuable advice from their peers and teachers in preparation for their turn.

To ensure the visit was an active and reflective experience, students noted their impressions, ideas, and conclusions on a reflection sheet as they moved through the stations.

This second edition of the ToK Fair offered IB Y1 students a practical and engaging introduction to one of the Theory of Knowledge internal assessment components, while providing IB Y2 students with a platform to share their expertise and insights.

It was a day filled with discussion, inquiry, and fresh ideas that once again highlighted the importance of collaborative learning within our IB community.

Everyday Heroes & Leaders: inspiring change through small actions

At European International School of Barcelona, we remain dedicated to providing an education that extends far beyond academic achievement—helping pupils understand who they are, how they relate to others, and the positive impact they can have on the world around them. Building on the success of previous flagship projects—such as Say My Name, which focused on identity and mutual recognition, and Emotions in Motion, dedicated to emotional intelligence—this academic year we are taking our commitment a step further with Everyday Heroes & Leaders, guided by the overarching theme of Inspiring Social Change.

The main objective is to help our pupils, from the youngest in Early Years to the oldest in Secondary and Baccalaureate, discover that being a “hero or leader” does not depend on popularity or visibility. Instead, it stems from the ability to positively influence one’s environment, empathise with others, foster collective well-being, and contribute to social change through small everyday actions.
Throughout the school year, all key stages will take part in age-appropriate activities designed to develop critical thinking, empathy, and social commitment. Through everyday scenarios, reflection, and shared experiences, we will promote values such as active listening, respect, responsibility, cooperation, observing others and one’s surroundings, and collective awareness.

With Everyday Heroes & Leaders, we aim to celebrate everyday heroes and leaders—individuals who transform their immediate surroundings through responsibility, empathy, commitment, and social awareness. Being a role model also means knowing how to listen, respect, act to help, and make decisions with others in mind.

Through this project, we aspire to develop more conscious, critical, and engaged pupils and future citizens who understand that anyone can make a positive contribution to their community. Because great changes begin with small daily actions.

CUANDO EL PATIO TAMBIEN EDUCA

When the playground educates too

When the bell rings, the playground is transformed. There are those who run after a ball, those who prefer to build a den, those who invent a new game, or those who look for that friend to share a moment with. It might seem like just a break between classes, but it is so much more than that.

In the playground, children decide what they want to play, with whom, and how. They agree with one another, change the rules if necessary, resolve minor disagreements, and discover that for a game to work, sometimes you have to listen, compromise, or find a solution that everyone likes.

There are lessons that happen almost unnoticed. Inviting a classmate who is on their own to play. Waiting for a turn. Accepting that you cannot always win. Sharing a spade, a ball, or an idea. These are small gestures repeated every day that, without grand lectures, help children understand what it truly means to live together in community.

Play also offers them a unique opportunity for self-discovery. There are those who dare to propose an idea for the first time, those who discover they enjoy leading a team, or those who prefer to observe before joining in. Each child finds their space, at their own pace, while gaining confidence and autonomy.

That is why, at EISB, we view the playground as an essential part of the educational experience. It is a space where children experiment, make mistakes, try again, form new friendships, and learn from one another in the most natural way possible: through play.

Because growing up is also about learning to live together, to listen, to share, and to trust in oneself. And many of these lessons begin, quite simply, through play.

EISB LIBRARY

Discover the New EISB Library

As many families already know, EISB has made a strong commitment to renewing our library, both as a physical space and as a place for reading, learning and discovery.

We started by updating the furniture to create a warmer, brighter and more comfortable environment. We have also introduced a new borrowing system, allowing students and staff to take books home and continue enjoying them beyond the school day. More than ever, the library is becoming a space to read, study, explore and simply relax among books.

EISB LIBRARY Library
We have also been expanding and updating our collection with new books and resources for different age groups, including Primary. New and refreshed sections include German and French books, comics and graphic novels, essays, wellbeing resources, and dictionaries in a wide range of languages, reflecting and supporting our international and multilingual community.

And this is just the beginning!

A space for reading, learning, and research

EISB LibraryFor our Year 5 and Year 6 students, the library is open during the lunchtime break, offering a quiet space to read and enjoy a book. From the adventures of Goa, Harry Potter and Greg to The Baby-Sitters Club, there are plenty of stories waiting to be explored.
As an IB World School, we are also strengthening the library’s role as an academic and research space. Workshops for IB students are helping them develop essential skills for approaching their academic work with confidence and responsibility, from using AI responsibly and identifying reliable sources to citing and referencing correctly and understanding academic integrity.

studies at the libraryThis year, the library will also welcome special guests and activities. Our own teachers will take part in reading sessions designed to introduce students to literary classics and inspire a love of reading. One of the first titles we will explore together is The Little Prince.

Curious to see how it goes? Stay tuned!

There is still a long way to go, but our goal is very clear: to make the EISB Library a welcoming, inspiring, and useful space for the entire school community, where every student can find a book, an idea, a quiet corner, or a new world to discover.

Magic Moments in Nursery: Building strong bonds between school and family

At the Nursery stage of the European International School of Barcelona, we consider it essential to establish strong emotional bonds and collaboration with families. We are convinced that their involvement plays a key role in children’s emotional, social, and cognitive development. That is why we organise Magic Moments sessions every Friday afternoon, offering children the chance to share a special time with their families in the classroom.

These gatherings are much more than just a fun activity. They are spaces designed for sharing, growth, and strengthening the bond between the family and the educational team. Through songs, stories, sensory games, and moments of relaxation such as massages, we create an atmosphere of trust and respect that reinforces the feeling of belonging to our educational community.

The presence of parents in the classroom offers children security and confidence, promoting more autonomous and settled development. This emotional stability promotes their well-being and, consequently, their readiness to learn and enjoy their day-to-day life at school.

For school professionals, Magic Moments offer a unique opportunity to observe children in their shared environment with families, enriching our pedagogical perspective. They allow us to establish a close and sincere dialogue with parents, thus building a coherent educational project in which we all participate.

At EISB, we believe that education is a shared journey, and Magic Moments are a living example of this valuable collaboration.

Growing in Diversity: Helping Children Become Global Citizens

At the European International School of Barcelona, we believe that education must transcend academics: it must shape committed, respectful individuals prepared to thrive in a global and constantly changing world. Our educational project is based on core values such as respect, responsibility, and intercultural cooperation, using a holistic approach that places the student at the centre of their learning.

From a very young age, children learn to see diversity as an opportunity for growth. We champion a global and inclusive outlook that transcends borders, reflected in everyday classroom life, multilingual learning, and activities that foster empathy and intercultural awareness.

Symbolic play, a daily activity in Nursery, offers children the chance to combine roles, professions, and costumes with traditional elements. This fusion helps to break down gender stereotypes and champion free play. We reinforce diversity through stories featuring characters in positive roles, images of diverse families, and a wide variety of cultures and geographical origins. This approach helps foster egalitarian perspectives and the recognition and normalisation of plural realities. Through emotional activities, visual resources, and simple gestures and interactions between peers, we promote well-being, empathy, and the creation of healthy bonds. In addition, to enrich the educational experience, we encourage families to participate actively and share their culture through stories, games, and celebrations.

At EISB, we educate for a pluralistic world and foster respect, creativity, and critical thinking from a very young age. We celebrate diversity as a source of growth and prepare committed children who are capable of building a more empathetic, inclusive, and just society. This is our challenge and our commitment.
