Growing in Diversity: Helping Children Become Global Citizens
At the European International School of Barcelona, we believe that education must transcend academics: it must shape committed, respectful individuals prepared to thrive in a global and constantly changing world. Our educational project is based on core values such as respect, responsibility, and intercultural cooperation, using a holistic approach that places the student at the centre of their learning.
From a very young age, children learn to see diversity as an opportunity for growth. We champion a global and inclusive outlook that transcends borders, reflected in everyday classroom life, multilingual learning, and activities that foster empathy and intercultural awareness.
Symbolic play, a daily activity in Nursery, offers children the chance to combine roles, professions, and costumes with traditional elements. This fusion helps to break down gender stereotypes and champion free play. We reinforce diversity through stories featuring characters in positive roles, images of diverse families, and a wide variety of cultures and geographical origins. This approach helps foster egalitarian perspectives and the recognition and normalisation of plural realities. Through emotional activities, visual resources, and simple gestures and interactions between peers, we promote well-being, empathy, and the creation of healthy bonds. In addition, to enrich the educational experience, we encourage families to participate actively and share their culture through stories, games, and celebrations.
At EISB, we educate for a pluralistic world and foster respect, creativity, and critical thinking from a very young age. We celebrate diversity as a source of growth and prepare committed children who are capable of building a more empathetic, inclusive, and just society. This is our challenge and our commitment.
