At the European International School of Barcelona, we celebrate linguistic and cultural diversity as a cornerstone of our educational project. To this end, we have launched the Home Language programme, a Primary School initiative designed to promote, preserve, and value the heritage languages of our students and their families.

The programme provides a weekly space where students sharing the same mother tongue can express themselves and learn together, supported by volunteer families. Held during break times, these 50-minute sessions feature fun activities, readings, games, songs, and cultural traditions. We currently host groups for Ukrainian, Romanian, Hebrew, Portuguese, and Russian, with French and Chinese groups launching soon.

This project delivers a profound emotional and academic impact. By helping children keep their native language alive, it reinforces their identity and self-esteem, while simultaneously supporting the acquisition of new languages.

Furthermore, Home Language serves as a vital meeting point for newly arrived international students, allowing them to connect from day one with classmates who share their language and culture. This immediate bond fosters a sense of welcome, security, and integration within the school community.

At EISB, we understand that language is more than just words: it is culture, identity, and a unique way of understanding the world. This programme enriches our school and helps create a more inclusive and cohesive community—one where diversity is embraced as an opportunity and a source of pride.
